Step 1: Define Your Electrical Specifications
Start with the power requirements of your equipment, including crushers, conveyors, screens, and pumps. Match the cabinet’s rated voltage, such as 380V, 400V, or 690V, to your site supply. Calculate the total load current and the available fault level at the connection point. Also determine how many motor starters or branch circuits are needed. As a best practice, leave 15 to 20 percent spare capacity for future equipment additions.
Step 2: Choose the Right Enclosure Protection Level
The cabinet must survive your specific environment. For dry, indoor control rooms, an IP42 rating is usually sufficient. For general industrial settings with some dust, IP54 is recommended. In wet, dusty, or outdoor locations, choose IP55 to IP65. For areas with high vibration, reinforced mounting combined with at least IP54 is advised. Step 4: Plan for Monitoring & Communication
Improve uptime with real-time data. Local indication devices such as ammeters, voltmeters, and run or fault lights can be mounted on the cabinet door. Connect the cabinet to your central control system using Modbus, PROFINET, or EtherNet/IP. Configure remote alarms for overload, phase loss, or temperature warnings to enable quick response.

Step 5: Include Essential Protection & Safety Features
Even without explosion-proof construction, safety remains critical. Use molded case circuit breakers and thermal overload relays for short-circuit and overload protection. Phase loss and under-voltage protection are standard on most motor starters. Provide an easily accessible emergency stop and a lockable main disconnect for lockout/tagout (LOTO). Optional but recommended arc-flash mitigation features include reinforced doors and pressure relief flaps.
Step 6: Consider Maintenance & Serviceability
Mining sites are remote, so repairs must be fast. Design the cabinet with a front-access layout so all components can be reached from the front, allowing wall mounting. Use clear, durable labels on every terminal, wire, and component. Stock common fuses, relays, and contactors as spare parts for quick field replacement.
