High-voltage distribution cabinets operate at voltages where a single mistake can cause arc flash, electric shock, or fatal injury. Safety is not a procedural formality – it is a set of mandatory practices that must be followed every time. Here are the core requirements for safe operation.

1.Qualified Personnel Only
Only trained and authorised electricians may operate high-voltage cabinets. Personnel must understand the system layout, switching sequences, and emergency procedures. They should be familiar with local safety regulations and hold valid certifications where required. Unqualified staff must never open the cabinet or attempt switching operations, regardless of urgency.
2.Use Proper Personal Protective Equipment
Before any operation, wear the correct PPE: arc-rated clothing, insulating gloves, safety helmet with face shield, and insulating footwear. The PPE level depends on the incident energy at the cabinet – determined by an arc flash study. Inspect all equipment before use. Damaged gloves or clothing offer no protection and must be replaced immediately.
3.Follow the Switching Sequence Strictly
High-voltage operations must follow a defined sequence: verify the correct circuit, open the breaker, confirm the off position, rack out the withdrawable unit if applicable, and then operate the earthing switch. Never rush or skip steps. Each action should be confirmed visually and, where possible, by a second person. This discipline prevents accidental energisation and arc faults.
4.Verify De-Energisation Before Work
Before touching any live part, test for absence of voltage using a properly rated voltage detector. Test the detector on a known live source first, then on the target circuit, and then again on the known source. After verification, apply earthing and short-circuiting devices. Lockout/tagout procedures must be applied to prevent unexpected re-energisation.

5.Respect the Cabinet’s Safety Interlocks
High-voltage cabinets are equipped with mechanical and electrical interlocks to prevent unsafe operations. Never force or bypass these interlocks. They are designed to stop you from opening a live compartment, closing an earthing switch under load, or withdrawing a breaker while current is flowing. If an interlock appears faulty, stop work and report it immediately.
6.Maintain Safe Clearances and Environment
Keep the area around the cabinet clear of tools, cables, and combustible materials. Ensure adequate lighting and unobstructed escape routes. For outdoor or humid installations, check that anti-condensation heaters and ventilation are working. Never operate a cabinet with damaged seals, missing covers, or signs of overheating. Environmental safety is part of operational safety.
Huadong Industry Control builds high-voltage distribution cabinets with safety interlocks, clear labelling, and full documentation to support safe operation. Reliable equipment and disciplined procedures together prevent accidents.
