Non-coal mining operations – such as iron, copper, gold, salt, and limestone extraction – present electrical equipment with severe challenges: dust, moisture, vibration, and often corrosive atmospheres. While many suppliers offer “mining-grade” cabinets, not all are truly suited for the specific demands of non-coal sites. At Huadong Industry Control, we have supplied KA-rated cabinets to mining projects across multiple continents. Based on that experience, here are four practical criteria we recommend for selecting the right cabinet for your non-coal application.

Criterion 1 – Verify the Correct Certification for Your Region

What you need to know: In China, KA certification specifically applies to non-coal mining (metal, non-metal mines). It covers safety requirements for enclosures, insulation, and protection against electric shock and fire in potentially explosive or high-risk underground environments. Other regions may require IECEx, ATEX, or local approvals.

What to check: Confirm that the cabinet carries the KA mark issued by an accredited Chinese testing authority. For export projects, also verify that the design meets relevant international standards – IEC 60079 for explosive atmospheres, IEC 61439 for switchgear assemblies, or local equivalent requirements in your country. Do not accept a cabinet that only has general-purpose CE or UL marks without mining-specific certification.

Our approach: All our KA cabinets are certified by recognised authorities, and we provide full test reports and certificates with every shipment. For international clients, we also offer compliance support for region-specific approvals upon request.

Criterion 2 – Match the Enclosure to Your Site Environment

What you need to know: Non-coal mines vary enormously – from dry, dusty underground hard-rock mines to humid, corrosive salt or potash operations. A cabinet that works in one environment may fail rapidly in another.

What to check: Assess your site conditions carefully. Consider:

Dust loading: Does the site generate fine conductive dust (e.g., iron ore) that can short-circuit components?

Moisture and water ingress: Is there dripping water, high humidity, or occasional wash-down?

Corrosive gases or salts: Will the cabinet be exposed to chlorides, sulfides, or other corrosive agents?

Vibration levels: Are there continuous impacts from crushers, mills, or heavy haulage equipment?

Our approach: We offer enclosure materials from heavy-gauge powder-coated steel to stainless steel, with IP ratings from IP54 to IP66. For corrosive environments, we specify marine-grade coatings, stainless steel hardware, and sealed cable entries. We add anti-vibration mounts and internal bracing where needed. The cabinet’s environmental protection is not an afterthought – it is engineered at the design stage.

Criterion 3 – Confirm Compatibility with Your Motors and Control Architecture

What you need to know: Non-coal mining processes – crushing, conveying, grinding, flotation, dewatering – use a wide range of motor sizes and starting methods. Some require soft starters or variable frequency drives (VFDs) for controlled acceleration; others need direct-on-line (DOL) or star-delta starters. The control cabinet must be designed specifically for your motor ratings and starting requirements.

What to check: Provide your motor list – ratings (kW/HP), voltages, starting currents, and duty cycles – to the cabinet manufacturer. Verify that the cabinet includes:

Correctly sized contactors, circuit breakers, and overload relays

Appropriate motor protection (thermal, phase loss, earth fault)

Compatibility with your PLC or distributed control system

Communication protocols that match your mine’s network (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, etc.)

Our approach: We design each cabinet around your actual motor list and control philosophy. We integrate starting equipment, protection relays, and communication interfaces exactly as specified. Our cabinets are fully pre-wired and tested with simulated motor loads, ensuring every starter operates correctly before shipment.

Criterion 4 – Ensure Maintainability and Spare Parts Availability

What you need to know: Mining operations run 24/7. When a control cabinet component fails, downtime costs are measured in hundreds of thousands of dollars per hour. Easy maintenance and ready spare parts availability are not optional – they are business-critical.

What to check: Ask the supplier:

Are all components from globally recognised brands (Siemens, ABB, Schneider, etc.) with local distributors in your region?

Is the internal layout arranged for safe, convenient access? Can an electrician replace a contactor or relay without disturbing other circuits?

Are wiring diagrams, component lists, and labelling clear and comprehensive – in English?

Does the supplier offer emergency support, including remote diagnostics and fast spare parts shipping?

Our approach: We use only genuine, major-brand components that are available worldwide. Every cabinet features neat, labelled wiring with full as-built documentation. We provide English-language manuals and spare parts lists with each shipment. Our technical support team is available via email, phone, and video call – and we can arrange express spare parts delivery to most mining destinations.

Why Choose Huadong for Your KA Mining Cabinets?

We have been designing and building KA-certified cabinets for non-coal mining projects for over 20 years. Our clients include major mining groups and equipment OEMs across Asia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East. We understand the practical realities of mine site installations – limited crane access, harsh transport conditions, and the need for fast commissioning.

Our cabinets are engineered to your motor list, your site conditions, and your preferred component brands. We offer factory acceptance testing (FAT) with remote witnessing, and we provide full documentation in English. On-time delivery and responsive support are part of our service commitment.
