Choosing a high-voltage control cabinet is a decision that affects safety, uptime, and long-term maintenance costs. Unlike low-voltage panels, HV cabinets operate at 3kV to 35kV, where insulation coordination, arc protection, and fault withstand capability become critical. Here are the key considerations to evaluate before you specify or purchase.

1、Match Voltage and Insulation to Your System
Confirm the cabinet’s nominal voltage matches your system – typically 3.6kV, 7.2kV, 12kV, 24kV, or 40.5kV. More importantly, verify the insulation level: power frequency withstand voltage and lightning impulse withstand voltage. These determine the cabinet’s ability to survive switching overvoltages and lightning surges. Always request test reports confirming compliance with IEC 62271 or your local standard.
2、Verify Short-Circuit Withstand Capacity
The cabinet must withstand the maximum prospective short-circuit current at its installation point. Check the rated short-time withstand current (Icw) and peak withstand current (Ipk). These values should exceed the fault current available from your upstream transformer or grid. Underspecified cabinets risk catastrophic failure during a fault. Ask the manufacturer for busbar bracing details and type-test evidence.
3、Check Internal Arc Classification
Arc flash is a serious hazard in HV switchgear. The Internal Arc Classification (IAC) rating indicates how well the cabinet protects personnel during an internal fault. Look for a rated arc duration (typically 0.5 or 1 second) and accessibility type (A or B). Cabinets with higher IAC ratings contain arc energy more effectively and direct hot gases away from operators. This is not a feature you want to compromise on.

4、Confirm Environmental Protection and Cooling
HV cabinets are sensitive to dust, moisture, and temperature. Specify the correct IP rating for your site – IP4X for clean indoor rooms, IP54 or higher for dusty or humid areas. For outdoor installations, consider weatherproof enclosures with anti-condensation heaters. Also verify the cooling method: natural ventilation, forced air, or heat exchangers. Cooling must be sized for your maximum ambient temperature and internal heat load.
5、Review Protection, Control, and Documentation
Ensure the protection scheme matches your network – overcurrent, earth fault, differential, or distance protection. Confirm relay types (electromechanical, solid-state, or numerical) and communication protocols (IEC 61850, Modbus, etc.). Finally, demand full documentation in English: single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, test reports, and operation manuals. Without proper documentation, commissioning and future maintenance become far more difficult.
